Recently, I have seen a rather large influx of players selling/buying large quantities of z-keys and lockpicks. I am returning after an extended break, but can't seem to come up with an explanation I understand.

Are these people participating in the tournement to get all these z-keys and through them lock picks?

Or are they farming the zaishen mission/bounty/combat quests?

Or are they just rich out of their minds?

If it is the tournament, how is it that there are so many winners? I read the wiki article, but I'm a little lost.

-Also, please don't close this as it is about z-keys. I'm not asking how to farm them, just trying to figure out why it seems they have increased in numbers-

A little of all of the above.
People farming the z-missions may be doing it. But people getting zoins aren't going to "waste" them on z-keys. More likely, the Bathazar faction rewards from RA, GvG, HA quests etc are a lot.
Also, there used to be something called the Xunlai Tournament House, where people could bet on the results on the tournaments and get free z-keys every month, which drove down the prices of z-keys and increased the supply.

I understand the balth faction thing. But I see people selling 100 at a time, thats 500k balth faction. o.O

discount merch=lockpicks

there are daily automated tourneys so theres plenty of opportunity to win(I'm not sure if this is what u meant)

That is what I was getting towards.

Also, discounted merchs come from a guild/alliance owning an outpost, correct?

Well, the thing about lockpicks is, they can buy them for 1.2k, and then sell them at the accepted price of 1.25k, and are guaranteed a profit.

500k aren't hard if you got a good pvp guild. And I think Anet discontinued XTH.

XTH has been closed due to extensive problems with the distribution of points. The last I heard, indicated that they were working on the problem and that XTH would remain closed until all bugs had been removed.
There has been nothing to indicate that it has been permanently discontinued.

Yep, thanks to the bugs involved with the distribution, i never received my last 2 months of points before the XTH got unplugged.

With the daily ATs, it's not just balthazar faction that contributes to swapping for Z keys, but also tournament reward points. Where the number of points awarded depends on your position at the end of the ATs. You can trade these points in 5 at a time for 1 Z key.
